Form a referral relationship with a complementary business – one that operates in a similar field but isn’t a rival. A good example would be a personal trainer and a health food store.

How would the relationship work? Well, you would get a referral fee when you send customers to them and they’d get one when they send customers to you.

So your referral partner would be incentivised to promote your business. In effect, you’d be adding an unpaid member of staff to your marketing department.

If their marketing generates sales, you would then gladly pay them a sales commission.
